Visio 2016 search is not working

Actually I have no idea how this works, probably I need to investigate deeper, but now I have not enough time tor that. So the issue was with the search, like here or here. Search simply was not working. I run win10 + Visio 2016 pro, all x64. I downloaded Azure and AWS  stencils, put them  to My Shapes folder under Documents and It sis not work.

I spent huge amount of time poking around, I was rebuilding indexes, restarting services, copying files. I even looked into the index with PowerShell. Files were there but Indexing did not work.

And as last resort I just copied and pasted all the files inside of the same directory:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\Visio Content\1033. And suddenly it worked!

So the workaround was to:

  1. Copy all stencil files you need to a C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\Visio Content\1033
  2. Select them all, copy (CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) them once again in the same directory

And they immediately appear in the search! Don’t ask me why.

  1. Hi,

I use Visio 2016 French on Windows 10 Pro French. I had the following bunch of problems with stencil importation. I’ll share my experience in the hope to spare someone many search hours.

The individual shape folder cannot be a subtree of c:\Users in my internationalized Windows versions due to a conflict with the automatic aliasing of this folder with c:\Utilisateurs (or its translation in non English languages).
=> Use C:\My shapes for example

An individual shape folder not indexed by the Windows Search Service cannot be searched.
=> Check individual shape folder indexation status.

A stencil with a language property different from the current session language cannot be searched.
=> Modify the stencil language property according to your language settings.
As this implies a rewrite of the stencil you can convert it to .vssx format.

An unsearchable stencil can become searchable after its deletion.
=> Remove it from the waste bin

A stencil freshly extracted to the individual shape folder is not searchable.
=> Make a copy in the same folder and permanently delete the copy a few couple of seconds latter.

If you are still experiencing shape search problems, you can reset the indexation of your individual shape folder:

=> Remove the individual shape folder from Windows Search indexation.
Backup the content of this folder to a non indexed folder or preferably to a file archive (.zip, .7z, .rar or any other format)
In visio configure the individual shape folder to an empty folder and stop it.
Permanently delete the content of your individual shape folder (/!\ check your backup before)
Submit your individual shape folder to Windows Search indexation
Restore its content from your backup. Wait a couple of minutes for the indexation to process.
Start visio, configure the individual shape folder to your folder.
    Test some shape searches.
If some fail, duplicate your stencils and permanently remove the copies.
